Are the best captains the ones that lead from the front?

The Murray Bombers would surely think so.

Echuca’s 15-and-under captain, Rose Byrne, led her team to an emphatic Goulburn Valley League grand final victory over Mooroopna at Deakin Reserve on Sunday morning.

After falling at the final hurdle last year, Byrne was ecstatic to see her side get across the line this time.

“It just feels amazing,” Byrne said.

“We’ve worked so hard all year, so to come out on top, that’s just what we wanted.

“I don’t know (if I thought I was best-on), I think we were all very well composed and had great pressure.

“They (Mooroopna) did very well and, whenever we come out against them, they always want to fight back.

“I think today we just protected the ball better than we have in other games. That’s the reason why we came out on top.

“Hopefully, we started off the day well (for Echuca) and the other teams can keep it up.”

Byrne strove under the Cats’ pressure in goal shooter and goal attack.

Her match-up with Mooroopna’s Marli Coller, was one of the game’s most intriguing.

The battle raged for the first three quarters, with neither player taking the bragging rights.

But Byrne was at the crux when the game broke open in the final quarter.

Her accuracy on goal was second to none as the Murray Bombers sealed their 12-goal win.
