Rovers are champions

Cameron Wills was awarded the Picola League 2024 Football Rising Star.

The Deniliquin Rovers Football & Netball Club was bestowed the Champion Netball Club 2024 award at Monday’s night’s Picola League Senior Awards.

The honour came after 19 Rovers netball players placed in the top 10 best and fairest counts across seniors and juniors.

Rovers also have five netball teams making a grand final this weekend, with A-grade and C-reserve defending their titles from 2023.

Several other local players and clubs were recognised at the awards night, held in Moama.

Deni Rovers football player Cameron Wills was awarded the 2024 Football Rising Star.

Rovers netball player Hazel Glowrey was nominated for the netball Rising Star award, but the honour went to Waaia’s Holly Boyd.

In the vote counts, Mathoura’s Lachlan Carmody led the way for the district, in the seniors football, finishing equal fifth.

Wills finished equal ninth, and fellow Rovers young gun Logan Leiper finished equal 10th in the seniors football.

In the reserves, Deni’s Aden Bermingham finished equal seventh, and Mathoura’s Timothy Sparey was one vote behind in equal eighth position.

The A-grade netball featured a Rovers quartet as Gabrielle Barlow finished fifth, Natalie Sampson equal sixth, Ella Park equal ninth and Carissa Bulmer equal tenth.

Mathoura’s playing coach, Katrina Fisher, finished third in the B-grade netball best and fairest count with 26 votes, two off Waaia’s winner, Ruby Arnel.

In some more standout results for Rovers, Jackie Thorpe finished equal fifth in B-grade and Nicole Felmingham equal fifth in C-grade netball.

In the C-Reserve netball, Rovers’ Lauren Butcher finished outright third, and the Cutters’ Jakara Atkinson finished equal fifth.

Blighty’s Meagan Lowry finished just outside the top 10 in A-grade in equal eleventh, and similarly, Rachel Bucholtz was just outside in equal 12th in C-grade.
