Saints and Eagles raise $5500 for Terry Socks it to Cancer campaign

All for a good cause: Benalla Saints president Lloyd Johnson presented Terry Greaves with the $5500 raised for the Terry Socks it to Cancer campaign.

Benalla and Mansfield’s Goulburn Valley League round 15 encounter a few months ago played out in the manner all football games do, tense, tough and full of energy.

But while the two teams battled it out on the field, the clubs came together off it, to raise more than $5500 for the Albury Wodonga Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

Senior football and netball players from both clubs donned bright pink and yellow socks in trust fund colours during their July 30 clash at Benalla Showgrounds, with the club also taking donations at the gate.

The fundraiser was inspired by Benalla Team of the Century member Terry Greaves, who is receiving treatment for metastatic melanoma.

The clubs also introduced the Terry Greaves Perpetual Shield, sponsored by Ray White Benalla, in the hope the game will become an annual event.

Greaves thanked both clubs, players, spectators and Ray White Benalla for their support of the cause.

“All money raised for the trust fund stays 100 per cent local for new equipment, facilities and services at the centre which is used by many people in the Benalla and Mansfield region,” Greaves said.

“It was fantastic to see so much support for the campaign and we hope to be able to do it all again next year.”
