Saints marching on despite numbers battle

Like many country football clubs Berrigan is facing a battle for playing numbers in 2023.

But coach Justin Hoggan is confident the Saints can still build a strong culture at Berrigan Recreation Reserve, even if on-field results don’t end up going their way this year.

“We’ve had a chunk of players decide either to not play footy at all or move up to a higher league to test themselves,” Hoggan said.

“It’s been very challenging getting guys interested in playing footy at all post-COVID, which is a bit disappointing from a passionate footy person like myself who’ll play until I physically can’t anymore.

“We’re trying in leaps and bounds to make the culture and club somewhere to want to come and be, whether you’re playing senior footy, having a kick and giggle in the reserves or just want to sit on the hill and sink a few cans.”

Hoggan cited the return of Fraser Haintz and Angus Coldwell from serious injuries which kept them out of most, if not all, of the 2022 season as important boosts to Berrigan’s 2023 campaign.

“Fraser won the best-and-fairest two years ago, but broke his foot last year,” Hoggan said.

“He’ll be an important part of our leadership team. He has been playing at the club all through his juniors and has stuck around.

“Angus is back from a broken arm which is a bonus as well.”

Middleton brothers Harley and Levi, as well as Bartlett brothers Jacob and Rory, are among those heading to other clubs from last year’s squad.

“We’ve all got to remember to keep supporting country footy clubs, not just Berrigan, because it’s not just about a game of footy or netball,” Hoggan said.

“Football-netball clubs are about community involvement and it’s so important to be able to give back to the clubs and the towns that we play for.”
