A pair of Benalla athletes won big at the recent Goulburn Valley Football Netball League awards.

Saints footballers Chris Bamford and Xavier Wapling attended the Goulburn Valley Hotel on Monday, September 16, to receive their awards.

Bamford’s leadership and sublime performances in the reserves grade saw him named the most valuable player with 49 votes.

In a difficult season for the Saints, which included only three wins and 115- and 128-point losses to Echuca and Mansfield, Bamford’s performances were crucial in inspiring his teammates to pull on the boots each week.

Similarly, Wapling took out the most valuable player in the under-18 division.

Polling 50 votes, Wapling tied for the win with Euroa’s Mitchell Walters.

Like the reserves, the under-18s struggled this season, managing only three wins, with Wapling a standout performer even in the most challenging games.
