Students and Jets settle for a tie
Northerners and Old Students had to settle for three points each on Saturday as the clubs’ Clyde Young Shield B-grade clash ended in a draw.
In a result that sent neither side home happy, a dramatic final over left both teams locked on 161 at the end of the game.
Batting first, the Students put up a score of 161, something coach Gino Saracino admitted was not enough on the Tallygaroopna wicket.
Walking the News through the dramatic end to the contest, Saracino said the dismissal of Jets’ Glen Davidson had the visitors thinking they were a chance — however the home team had a different idea.
Sat on 7-121, a 35-run partnership between Bayden and Grant Hutchins had Northerners in the box seat at the death.
“They needed six to win with three wickets in hand, then we got Grant Hutchins out,” Saracino recalled.
“It was the number 10 and 11 at the crease and then the 10 hit one through slips. I was in first slip, we didn’t get to it and it went for four.”
This four put the Jets at 9-161 with five balls remaining, with one run all that was needed to win.
Yet some great death bowling from Tom McGee saw the result end even, after three dot balls and a wicket saw no change to the score in the last over.

In other B-grade action, Karramomus re-joined the winners’ list after a solid win over Tatura.
Taking on the Bulldogs at Tatura Park, the Bloods posted a healthy total of 218 thanks to the innings’ of Bayden Bailey (54) and Andrew Hawker (46).
This total was under little threat early as the visitors’ bowlers dismissed three Tatura batters for just five runs.
The home team battled back into the contest, however the performances of Jai Bailey (3-14) and Travis Guppy (2-16) got the Bloods the win.
Only one Sheriff in town
Murchison’s Jim McGregor Shield C-grade side fell to Undera at home on Saturday — with the performance of one man standing out.
Like his namesakes in the American Wild West, Undera’s Russell Sheriff let everyone know who was boss.
Hitting his way to 86 not out with the bat, Sheriff’s innings helped his side to a defendable total of 3-195.
Then with the ball, the great man stood up once again, taking 2-23 from six overs to help dismiss the home side for 172 and continue his team’s good form.
