Seymour AFL export Sam Durham has extended his stay at Essendon until at least the end of 2024, signing a two-year contract extension with the club last week.
Durham joined the Bombers through the 2021 NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft and quickly had an impact throughout his seven senior games across his debut season.
In his time at the Bombers, Durham has averaged 13.6 disposals, 6.4 kicks, 7.3 handballs and 4.4 marks per game.
The former Murray Bushranger’s path to the AFL is one of resilience, as he was overlooked at two successive drafts before being picked up by Richmond’s VFL program, where his impressive start to the 2021 VFL season caught the Bombers’ attention.
Durham’s versatile skills and ability to play as an inside and outside midfielder were key reasons behind the Bombers re-signing the 20-year-old for a further two years.
Durham said he was excited to recommit to the club and remain a Bomber for a further two years.
“I’ve been so grateful for every opportunity I’ve had at the Bombers, and I can’t wait to spend the next couple of years at the club,” Durham said.
“It’s great to know they have the belief in me and it’s exciting to be a part of a young side that has a lot of potential.”
General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said Durham had embraced his opportunity at the Bombers and continued to develop his football.
“His tough mentality and style of football combined with his versatility across the ground makes him a very valuable player and I look forward to seeing where he takes his football over the next two years,” Dodoro said.
“Sam is a caring, unassuming young man who goes about his business quietly, and his versatility and ability to play as an inside and outside midfielder makes him an asset for our emerging side. We look forward to seeing his growth over the coming years.”
Durham celebrated his contract extension with a standout performance in Essendon’s thrilling four-point win over Adelaide at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Playing across half forward, the long-haired live-wire was prominent all day long, registering 18 disposals, taking seven marks and kicking a goal.
