Shepparton Bulls dropped a statement win on the head of Kiwi Hawthorn in round one of their Victorian Rugby Premiership defence.

The Bulls were too strong, too powerful and too quick for an undergunned Hawthorn opposition on Saturday as Moronae Silaga’s side sprinted to a 52-19 victory at Vibert Reserve.

In a repeat of last season’s grand final, which Shepparton won 24-23, the Bulls’ line-breaking speed and strength far outstripped that of the visitors as multiple Bulls crossed the line during the 33-point win.

The Bulls’ next task arrives this weekend when they hit the road to face a fearsome Northern Panthers outfit on its home deck.

News photographer Rechelle Zammit patrolled the sidelines for the Bulls-Hawthorn match to snap the action.
