Soccer fans across the region will be treated to some exciting action over the weekend, with the Goulburn Valley Suns set to play at home and a Central Victorian League derby sure to excite.

For the Suns, McEwen Reserve has been more a theatre of nightmares than a theatre of dreams this season, with the NPL Two side yet to win a game.

However with a relegation play-off on the horizon, interim manager Lee Blackburn will be looking to get his side in the best form possible.

This weekend the Suns will face the third-placed Brunswick Juventus, with the visitors aiming for promotion to the top division.

The Suns will enter the clash with plenty of optimism, with the team falling by just one goal last time the sides met.

Saturday’s game at McEwen Reserve will begin at 3pm.

Meanwhile in the Central Victorian League One Men’s competition, Shepparton United will do battle with Shepparton South.

It has been an impressive season for both sides so far and sparks are sure to fly when the opening whistle is blown.

South coach Rob Harmeston said his side was looking good for the game.

“I think the big thing for us this week is just to make sure we keep pressing,” Harmeston said.

“We can’t go in there going ‘we’ll be happy with a draw’ because we need the win.

“They’ve got a completely different team to the last time we met so we just need to make sure that we play to our standard and we play our football.”

South will go into Sunday’s contest with a relatively unchanged lineup from last week, with Justin Cirillo almost ready to return.

Young gun Nicholas Mori will be one to watch for South this weekend, with the talent consistently performing when on the pitch.

Sunday’s game between Shepparton United and Shepparton South will kick off at 3pm at McEwen Reserve.

In the other League One Men’s clash, Tatura will welcome La Trobe University to Howley Oval on Sunday afternoon at 3pm.

Elsewhere the Shepparton Jaguars will face an away trip to Strathdale in the League Two Men’s cup.

The Jaguars fell to Shepparton South’s reserves side last week and will be aiming to bounce back against some decent opposition. Saturday afternoon’s clash in Strathdale begins at 3pm.

In the League One Women’s competition, Shepparton United will face off with the ladder-leading Strathfieldsaye Colts United.

Shepparton United coach Lucy Ciancio was looking forward to the game and explained the Colts were a strong side who would start well.

“I’m hoping the (Shepparton) girls come out with the same energy as well,” Ciancio said.

United will be missing a couple of players due to work this weekend, however Ciancio was confident the side would be focussed enough to win.

“We just need to come out strong every game and are hoping to win the rest of our games to hold on to third position,” she said.

United’s game against Strathfieldsaye will begin at 11am on Sunday at McEwen Reserve.

In the League Two Women’s competition, Tatura will face Kyneton District at home.

This contest will be a big one, with the two sides currently locked in a battle for top spot on the ladder.

The action at Tatura’s Howley Oval is set to get under way on Sunday at 11am.
