This weekend, golfers who take to the green at Shepparton Golf Club will wear a splash of yellow in memory of a former great.
The club will hold its #DoingItForJarrod fundraising day on Saturday, August 20, to honour local golfing legend Jarrod Lyle.
Lyle, who started his career at Shepparton Golf Club, died in 2018 from acute myeloid leukemia.
Funds raised from the day will go towards not-for-profit organisation Challenge, which provides free support for families living with cancer, of which Lyle was an ambassador.
Lyle was inducted to the Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame in 2021 for his contributions to the sport of golf in the region.
Shepparton Golf Club committee member Ray Sizer said this weekend’s event was easily one of the biggest events on the club’s calendar.
“It’s a big day for our members and everyone involved at the club,” Sizer said.
“Currently over 200 players have booked in for a day of golf, our afternoon field is booked out already, but spots are available for our stableford event in the morning.”
An auction will follow the day’s play, with a number of big ticket items up for grabs.
A Geoff Ogilvy-signed flag from his 2006 US Open win, a 2017 Presidents Cup flag and a Big Bash League cricket bat are some of the items going under the hammer, with money raised to go towards Challenge.
Sizer said with the amount of interest already generated, the club hoped to ‘‘smash’’ the national record of money raised this Saturday.
“There’s close to 300 clubs involved and $17,000 is the record, we’re expecting to smash that,” he said.
Bookings are still available to play on Saturday, before the auction and drinks get under way from 5.30pm until late.
