Have you ever fancied taking on a pentathlon in the mid-January heat?

A series of Shepparton’s best young athletes did just that.

A total of 11 Shepparton competitors journeyed to Melbourne on January 20 and 21 for pentathlons and heptathlons as part of the State Combined Events, with Mooroopna’s Reeve Evans heading the charge in the under-17 boys at Melbourne’s Albert Park.

Evans took silver in his division as the Cats prospect continues a remarkable nine-year streak of top-eight finishes in his age category during football off-seasons.

Now Shepparton itself will become the focus of regional Victoria’s Little Athletics ranks.

Riding a wave of momentum after the Shepparton contingent’s strong performances in the city, this weekend will bring in the Northern Country Region Track and Field Carnival.

Spectators will witness about 350 participants competing from all reaches of northern Victoria, while Shepparton Little Athletics Centre itself will field a whopping 94 entrants.

Among them will be a litany of kids beyond Evans who will come in chuffed with their last turnout in Melbourne.

Georgia Robertson starred in her under-13 girls field and earned a place on the dais as a top-eight finisher.

Cassandra Mayne (under-14 girls) and Elijah McLeod (under-15 boys) also achieved top 10 placings in fields ranging from 40 to 70 participants deep.

Shepparton will stage the event on Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11.
