The driving future of Shepparton V8 Supercars export Garry Jacobson is up in the air after he was let go by PremiAir Racing in a brutal mid-season move.
Jacobson’s departure was announced just two days after the Merlin Darwin Triple Crown, where he returned results of 22nd, 18th and 22nd in what was a tough weekend for the Goulburn Valley local.
Sitting in 24th on the season standings after six rounds, 2022 had been somewhat of a mixed bag for Jacobson, with the highlight coming at Albert Park, where he delivered PremiAir Racing a trio of top 10 finishes.
But that wasn’t enough for the team to persist with the 30-year-old, who announced the news in a media release on Tuesday afternoon.
“PremiAir Racing wishes to confirm that effective immediately, Garry Jacobson and PremiAir Racing have parted ways,” the release read.
“Jacobson’s contract has been officially ended this afternoon (June 21), and PremiAir Racing is exploring its options regarding a replacement driver for the #76 Subway PremiAir Racing Supercar.
“Announcements regarding the new driver for the #76 will be made at the earliest possible opportunity.
“PremiAir Racing will be making no further comment regarding Garry’s departure and wishes him well for his future endeavours.”
Jacobson joined what is now known as PremiAir Racing ahead of the 2022 season.
Initially racing alongside Fabian Coulthard under its previous Team Sydney banner, Jacobson stayed on as the team changed ownership in the past off-season and partnered by Chris Pither in 2022.
The Merlin Darwin Triple Crown was Jacobson’s 50th V8 Supercars start after a storied career in the lower divisions that culminated in him winning the Super2 title in 2016 with Prodrive (now known as Tickford Racing).
Now on the outer, Jacobson will be hoping to land a co-drive elsewhere, with former team Matt Stone Racing being floated as a potential option.
The V8 Supercars championship continues on July 8-10 as the paddock heads north for the NTI Townsville 500.
