Growing tally: Jack Edwards after his impressive outing at the junior state championships.

If his recent success at the 2022 Junior Track State and Territory Championships are any thing to go by, Shepparton Cycling Club young gun Jack Edwards is going to need a bigger trophy cabinet.

Edwards secured two golds and two bronze medals at the Adelaide Superdrome last weekend as a bottom-age rider in the under-17 category.

Competing against 12 other riders from South Australia and the Northern Territory, Edwards came in fourth on the event’s first day in the individual pursuit.

He blitzed his race in the 500m time trial, recording a time of 34.22 seconds at a speed of 52.292km/h to take out gold.

Edwards went on to take out two bronze medals in the point score and scratch races, before clinching his second gold medal in his match sprint in 11.416 seconds at a speed of 63.069km/h.

He is trained by SCC members and Proform coaches Brad and Rhianon Norton.

His performance marks a big month for Shepparton Cycling Club, after it was announced this week Luca Lancaster, son of SCC alumni Brett, would be competing at the Bay Crits in Geelong from January 1-3.

Lancaster raced the circuit on a number of occasions during his distinguished career and said he couldn’t be prouder to see his son follow in his footsteps.

“After 20 years in Europe it’s nice to be back, as a Shepp boy and being Victorian I was always proud to race here,” Lancaster said.

“It kind of gives you goosebumps to come down here, to have him see what I used to do, and for him to experience this great race in this great town.”

Luca will compete in a reformatted and revitalised race series this year which will feature some of the best emerging cycling talent in the state.

“I think I’ll be able to be pretty good, since my dad raced here it’ll be inspiring,” Luca said.

“It’s pretty cool to have the chance to race where some of the big guys raced.”
