Mooroopna premiership player Tamara Smith has signed on with Hawthorn for its inaugural AFLW season.
After being overlooked at recent drafts, Smith’s recent VFLW form with Geelong had the Hawks snap up the exciting on-baller as an open-age recruit.
The 22-year-old has been in stellar form for Geelong’s VFLW outfit this season, ranking first in the league for tackles (123), sixth in kicks and eighth for disposals after 11 games.
She was also recently named as the under-23 All Stars’ MVP in their clash with the NAB AFLW Academy in May, amassing 19 disposals, 11 tackles and six clearances.
Hawthorn list manager Mitchell Cashion praised Smith’s defensive awareness as a midfielder.
“Tamara’s pressure around the ball is elite and she is tough and competitive, despite being slightly undersized in the midfield,” Cashion said.
“She is also clearly the best tackler in the VFLW competition and she has a point to prove at this level.”
Geelong’s head of AFLW and pathways Brett Johnson said Smith would be a valuable asset to Hawthorn’s midfield.
“Tamara Smith has been a valuable contributor to our VFLW program over the past few seasons and has set the standard for intensity at the contest,” Johnson said.
“Tamara’s hard work has paid off with her now receiving this well-deserved opportunity at AFLW level. We wish her well as she continues her football journey at Hawthorn.”
