Shepparton’s soccer community will come together on Wednesday evening to raise money for one of its own.

Utilising the annual Mimmo Lia Trophy as a vehicle for good, Goulburn Valley Suns will take on a Shepparton All-Stars outfit at McEwen Reserve to fundraise for Jodie Montagner.

A valued long-term member of the region’s soccer fraternity, Montagner has faced a number of serious health battles in recent years.

Unable to work for the past two years and recently heading to Germany to receive specialised treatment, Wednesday night’s game will have takings from the canteen, entry, a raffle and an auction — featuring a signed Garang Kuol Australia shirt — donated to help the family with costs.

Montagner’s son Jordan, who played soccer in the region for more than a decade before moving to Queensland, said the efforts of the community had been unreal.

“We’re overwhelmed by the support,” Montagner said.

“From the Shepparton community in particular it’s been amazing.

“It’s just humbling and overwhelming how many people are willing to give up their time, it’s been a lot, she’s just been really appreciative of it all.

“We’re just hoping we can put on a good show for whoever comes down, the All-Stars team will be pretty competitive on the night.”

A long-term friend of Jordan, Justin Milic, helped organise the event, reaching out to local clubs to get the ball rolling.

“I’ve always seen soccer as a way to help,” Milic said.

“Once I heard about Jordan’s mum I just thought I’d love to do something for her because they’re an unreal family.

“I’ve been around the soccer community in Shepparton for a long time now and I just reached out to the boys at every club and they were really happy to help do something for her.

“We are just really hoping everyone gets down there and makes a great night out of it.”

Set to coach the All-Stars side alongside Frankie Lagana, Milic will have Goulburn Valley Bendigo Amateur Soccer League talents such as Cody Sellwood, Nathan Radevski and Thomas Corso at his disposal.

Coming up against the Suns, there is sure to be a fascinating encounter, with Suns coach Craig Carley more than happy for his side to be involved.

“I just think it’s a beautiful touch for a beautiful family and hopefully we can get as many people there and raise as much money as possible for the occasion,” Carley said.

“Jordan and his family have been key members of our club and local soccer in the area for a very long time.

“From a football sense it’s really good to play the best local players in the area as well, so it’s a win win for everyone.”

Kick off at McEwen Reserve on Wednesday will be at 7.30pm with entry a gold coin donation.
