Cobram Football Netball Club has some brand-new equipment thanks to funding from Sporties Barooga and AFL Goulburn Murray.

Last week, the club celebrated the generous funding received for new goal post nets, which have now been installed.

While Cobram is a strong, hardworking family club, it can struggle, at times, to maintain its facilities, as many country sporting clubs do.

With this in mind, club vice-president Rob Allen approached AFL Goulburn Murray regional manager Shaun Connell and put forward an application for a grant to cover the cost of the much-needed nets, a total of $40,000.

Thanks to Mr Connell and his team at AFL Goulburn Murray, they agreed to generously provide the amount of $27,500 towards the project.

“We are pleased to make an impact on much-needed projects such as this for Cobram, which is one of 82 affiliated clubs that we work with that stretches from Finley to Wandong,” Mr Connell said.

“It’s a partnership.”

Mr Allen also spoke to members of the board of directors at Sporties to explain the situation, and without hesitation they agreed to support the club with a $13,000 donation.

Sporties board president Gary Hunt said it was happy to be involved in improving community assets.

“While Cobram Football Club will benefit, so will the broader community. It’s about helping each other,” Mr Hunt said.

Within any sporting club, there are unsung heroes who give their time freely, and Mr Allen made special mention of the efforts of grants officer Monique Neal, to whom he presented a gift of flowers and champagne for her diligent efforts in applying successfully for the funding.
