Students from across Victoria will be travelling to Melbourne next week to compete in the state secondary school athletics carnival.
Cobram Secondary College students Casey Chandler (Year 9), James Hooper (Year 12) and Sianna Sarre (Year 7) will represent the Hume region in the shot-put, the 800m and 1500m and javelin, respectively.
CSC head of health PE Robert Glass said it was good to see students from across year levels compete at state.
“In the 10 years I’ve been here, I don’t recall three individual students going to state athletics,” Mr Glass said.
“It’s huge for the kids to see, really, because at small country schools you don’t see many kids go to state,” he said.
Casey Chandler, who was named age champion for her age category, said it would be her first time participating in a state championship for athletics.
“[Mr Glass] said I had to do as many sports as I could, and I did, and I placed in them, so it got me age champion somehow,” Casey said.
The three CSC students will be joined at Lakeside Stadium on Monday, October 21 by Cobram Anglican Grammar School students Madison McDiarmid (Year 12) and Samuel Brown (Year 8).
Madison took home first place in long jump and second place in both shot-put and discus, while Samuel cleared first place in the hurdles.
From across the region, St Mary of the Angels’ Charlotte Hall (Year 8) will be competing in the years 12–14 girls multiclass competition after placing in the long jump, shot-put, and 100m and 200m sprints at the Lodden Mallee regional competition in Bendigo last Thursday.
The state secondary athletics championships will be held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, Melbourne, on Monday, October 21, from 10am.
