Steamers charge towards finals

Moama closed out a tremendous home-and-away season in the Bendigo weekend premier pennant division one competition on Saturday.

The Steamers were already assured of the minor premiership, but tuned up for the upcoming finals series with a resounding 18-108 to 0-58 dispatching of Castlemaine at Castlemaine.

Moama produced a clean sweep of the four rinks on the way to maximum points.

Kevin Anderson and his rink of Peter Campbell (third), Cassandra Millerick (second) and Jacob Brighton (lead) set the tone with a 32-11 defeat of Gregory Brain.

Star bowler Alex Marshall put on a show with his rink of Bradley Campbell (third), Ash Vesty (second) and Olivia Cartwright (lead).

Marshall’s rink despatched Lachlan Darroch 29-10.

Kevin Brennan, who was joined by Glenn Dorward (third), Graham O’Brien (second) and Jim Hogan (lead), secured a 25-16 victory over Peter Brain.

Young gun Cameron Keenan skipped his rink of Barry Brennan (third), Rob Wastell (second) and Brian Davie (lead) to a thrilling 22-21 success against Rodney Phillips.

Moama completed its regular season with a 13-3-2 win-loss-draw record to finish on 236 points, 34 clear of second-placed Bendigo.

The two heavyweights will square-off in a blockbuster semi-final at Bendigo East Bowling Club on Saturday from 1.30pm.

The prize for the victor, the first spot in the grand final on Sunday, March 12.

For the loser, they will use the double chance and play the winner of the Bendigo East and South Bendigo first semi-final.

Moama and Bendigo have met twice this season, with the ledger one win apiece.

Moama scored an 16-88 to 2-67 win on home soil in round four before Bendigo turned the tables in round 13, winning 16-83 to 2-63.
