Moama’s impressive start to the Bendigo Division 1 pennant season continued at the weekend.

The Steamers won both matches in a rare double-header to climb into second spot on the top-flight ladder.

Moama kick-started a great weekend by defeating Golden Square 16-78 to 2-66 at home on Saturday.

Star international recruit Alex Marshall set the tone for the Steamers, skipping his rink to a 27-18 victory against Golden Square.

Marshall’s rink, which featured Olivia Cartwright as lead, Peter Campbell second and Cameron Keenan third, proved the leading performer for the Steamers, who won three of the four rinks.

Kevin Anderson won a low-scoring battle against Square’s Bradley Marron 19-12, with Bradley Campbell’s rink a 22-14 victor over Gary Downie.

The lone rink to prevail for the visitors was Gregory Podesta, who scored a 22-10 success against Kevin Brennan.

The Steamers hit the road bound for Marong on Sunday.

The match loomed as a potential banana skin for Moama, but after a serious challenge from the home side, came away winning three of the four rinks for a 16-95 to 2-82 triumph.

Brennan bounced back impressively with a 30-19 win against Chris Bramley.

Kevin Anderson, who had Cass Millerick in a lead role following her impressive recent Victorian Open performances, accounted for Daniel Fulton 30-20.

The closest battle featured Marshall against Andrew Whatly, with Marshall prevailing 21-20.

Marong’s lone rink victor was Mark Dickins, who defeated Bradley Campbell 23-14.

The sizeable haul of points from the weekend was enough to propel Moama into second spot.

Moama sits on 100 points through eight rounds, just shy of competition pacesetters South Bendigo (104).

Golden Square is in third on 92, with Bendigo rounding out the top four on 88.

Moama welcomes Castlemaine to the border on Saturday.
