Motorsport enthusiasts in north-east Victoria will be rejoicing this weekend, as the Supercars Championship returns to Winton, the nation’s action track, for the first time since 2019.
The Winton SuperSprint event will consist of a trio of 36-lap races — one on Saturday and two on Sunday — along with a number of supporting races and events across the action-packed weekend.
Shepparton’s Garry Jacobson is expected to have a strong supporting crowd this year, along with Albury speedster Jordan Boys, who is making his first solo Supercars Championship start as a wildcard entry.
Jacobson is having a solid season with newly-formed PremiAir Racing, having secured a string of top-10 finishes; he sits in 22nd ahead of a trip to his home circuit.
There will be plenty of local support for the Albury-based Brad Jones Racing (BJR) squad, which has enjoyed past success at Winton, including a pair of race victories for Tim Slade in 2016.
Andre Heimgartner, currently sitting in 13th on the championship leaderboard with 538 points, is BJR’s main challenger this year.
The V8 SuperUte series will also hit the track at Winton, with Benalla’s Ellexandra Best looking to build upon her 13th placing.
Aside from the main attraction, a bevy of supporting acts will offer spectators plenty this weekend.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship is back, making its first appearance at Winton since 2013.
Known for its abundance of passing, the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series will entertain many, with the Australian Formula Ford Series and National Sports Sedan Series also set to take place across the weekend.
Off-track attractions include the Trade Alley merchandise area at Turn 5, which will incorporate a range of fun activities and food stalls and the Turn 10 Tavern, which will allow patrons to watch the racing action from a unique vantage point while enjoying refreshments.
The following weekend, keen fans will be back at the track for Historic Winton, one of Australia’s largest historic race meets, to be held on May 28 and 29.
