A one-point semi-final blockbuster and blistering run of games has enabled Tatura Titans’ under-16 boys basketball team to clinch a memorable tournament win.

The Titans ventured to Wodonga on Saturday, November 19, to compete in the Wangaratta Basketball Association’s Junior Tournament.

Tatura Basketball Association president Julie Batey said the team’s self-belief and positive attitude had them exceed all expectations.

“We have eight in our team, we didn’t have a selection of players to choose from, that’s just how we formatted our team,” Batey said.

“We were grand final winners of our pool which was fantastic, we went there hoping to win a game or two.

“It was a great achievement, they have worked so hard leading up to the event in training, they have put in a lot of work with their fitness and skills.

“It was nice to see that come through in the game, they’re very well-disciplined and well-controlled which was also a huge bonus for us.”

After opening round victories over Wodonga and Mansfield the Titans went down to eventual Pool A grand final winner Wangaratta.

The side bounced back to secure a 38-28 triumph over Tumut to book a spot in the semi-final on Sunday.

The Titans would go on to overcome their semi-final opponents, Benalla Breakers, in thrilling fashion.

“They’re a good little team, we won the semi-final by one point and that was with just two seconds left on the clock,” Batey said.

In the decider, it was clear the Titans wouldn’t settle for anything less than a win as they cruised to the title with a 52-39 win over Mansfield.

Next up for the young side is a trip to Tatura Basketball Stadium this weekend for the Shepparton Basketball Association’s Junior Tournament.
