Eighty-nine runs.

That was the difference between Paul Newman’s innings on Saturday and his spell with the bat on Sunday.

The Hurley’s Hotel Hounds opener put on a show in his side’s first Goulburn Valley Bush Bash League game of the season on Sunday, making his way to 90 off 58 balls.

Striking four sixes and nine fours in an impressive spell with the bat, Newman’s innings was a far cry from his performance at the Goulburn Murray Cricket crease on Saturday where he made one run.

“It’s always good to get a few runs,” Newman said after the game.

“It was pretty nice batting, it was a nice wicket, it was skidding on nice and it’s good to get a couple away.”

On the winning side in what was a thrilling season opener, Newman’s 90 was key to the Hounds’ positive result.

Enjoying playing with and against some top level cricket talent, the 40-year-old said it was good to get the competitive juices flowing against players from across the state.

“The squads are probably a little bit deeper than they have been in the past, so it all makes for a pretty strong comp I would’ve thought,” he said.

“It was just one of those days today, that’s cricket, sometimes you get a few — I got one yesterday — so it’s the ultimate leveller.”
