The Murray Valley Cricket Association season has started slowly for Tocumwal’s A-grade side, who travelled to Cobram and started the day fielding on Saturday.

Cobram won the toss and elected to bat on what turned out to be a good batting wicket.

With two club debutants, and a new skipper in Reilly Rennick Tocumwal took to the field.

Cobram got off to a quick start with a few loose balls allowing them to get away.

Tocumwal’s bowlers then tightened things up and the pressure built.

Liam Sutton was rewarded for his hard work and excellent bowling taking three quick wickets in succession on his way to figures of 4-19.

It was a tight battle throughout the Cobram innings, with the Tigers building partnerships for Tocumwal to then take a wicket and break them.

Cobram ended up 9-178 off their 45 overs.

It was a much improved fielding effort from the team compared with previous seasons, and it was great to see new Tocumwal players Cooper Harris (1-36) and Zia Ur Rahman (1-11) bowl really well and get a wicket each.

Liam Sutton finished with 9 Overs – 4 Maidens and took 4-19.

Andrew Lean took 2-39.

With the bat, Tocumwal got off to a bright start with Tom Oliver and Pete Harrison negotiating the early overs well.

Unfortunately for Tocumwal they had a collapse of four quick wickets which put the batting order under pressure.

Reilly Rennick (29) held the innings together, batting well with Hayden White then Tom White (16) to keep Tocumwal in the game.

Again, unfortunately for Tocumwal, when Hayden White was run out another collapse saw them fall behind.

Sam Bennett (13 not out) and Zia Ur Rahman (8) showed some fight at the end putting another 24 runs on for the ninth wicket, but it wasn’t enough for Tocumwal.

They were all out for 119.

It was a decent effort but Tocumwal needed to be better with the bat if they are to be competitive.

Cobram won by 59 runs.
