Tight tussles for Deni bowlers

Three of the Deniliquin Bowling Club’s Weekend Pennant matches last Saturday were nailbiters.

Division 1 defeated Rochester by two shots, Division 2 beat the same club by one shot, while Division 3 went down to Rich River by two shots.

The Division 1 match couldn’t have been much closer with Shane Laing and Simon Chisholm’s rink each winning by one shot, and Jamie Shields’ crew finished at 18-all.

The overall 54-52 victory saw the Deniliquin team consolidate their place in second spot on the ladder.

Despite suffering comprehensive defeats on two of the three rinks, Division 2 managed to manufacture a thrilling one shot victory against Rochester.

Paul ‘Trapper’ Snare’s side lost 14-26, while Bryan Kemnitz’s team suffered a similar fate when they were beaten 11 shots to 23.

It was then up to Christine Taylor, Bruce Clancy, David Hessel and Rob Morris (skip) to launch the rescue mission when they recorded a thumping win, 33 shots to eight, and drag the team over the line by the barest of margins.

In an almost identical reversal of the Division 2 match, Division 3 claimed solid wins on two rinks but still succumbed to Rich River, 58 shots to 60.

Lee Pattinson skipped his side to a comfortable 21-15 victory, and Mark Law’s team of Ian McKenzie, Craig Murray and Jill Grimshaw went even better when they prevailed, 25 shots to 16.

Unfortunately Tom Todd’s harem couldn’t quite do enough to prevent the overall two shot deficit when they were beaten 12-29.

Division 5 were pitted against top side Echuca.

They handled the challenge with aplomb with a resounding victory, 50 shots to 27, while cementing their second position on the ladder.

Midweek Pennant

The Deniliquin Bowling Club Midweek Pennant side fell just short against Moama Steamers on Tuesday, when they were beaten 51 shots to 64.

Chris Taylor’s rink went down 13-23, while Craig Hillier’s crew suffered a similar fate in losing 16 shots to 23.

The only shining light was the combination of Steve O’Brien (skip), Terry Taylor, Mark Law and Paul Snare who claimed a 22-18 victory, but insufficient enough to prevent the 13 shot defeat.

The Midweek Pennant team for next Tuesday, against Rochester at home, is as follows: T Taylor, D McCulloch, P Snare, S O’Brien (s); T Danckert, R Little, C Taylor, J Flisher (s); I McKenzie, T King, S King, C Hillier (s).
