Mathoura is still hunting for its second win of the Picola District Football League season after tasting defeat to a fast-finishing Deniliquin Rovers in round 10.

The Timbercutters kept pace with the sixth-placed Rovers at Deniliquin for most of the contest until the Rovers piled on five goals to one in the final quarter to turn a nine-point three-quarter time buffer into a 41-point win.

Mathoura closed to within nine points after facing a 22-point deficit at half-time, restricting Deniliquin to one goal in the third term to give itself a chance of victory.

But it wasn’t to be as the Rovers saluted win number five for the season, while the Timbercutters slumped to loss number seven.

Noah Milner and Tom Creighton played a key role for Mathoura, while Izaac Johnson booted two goals to lead the scoring for the Timbercutters.

Meanwhile, Hayden Barker (three goals), James Kirby and Brady Trotman helped Deniliquin over the line.

Mathoura will now face the side above it on the ladder when it takes on Berrigan at Mathoura Recreation Reserve this Saturday.
