Shepparton Art Museum played host to a major announcement in regards to the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, with the Victorian Government and Commonwealth Games Federation locking in the full line-up of sports for the regional Victoria showcase.
Golf, 3x3 basketball, 3x3 wheelchair basketball, coastal rowing, shooting, shooting Para sport, BMX racing, mountain bike cross-country, track cycling and Para cycling track have been officially added to the list — with the Games to include 20 sports and 26 disciplines, including Para sports.
This means that coastal rowing, golf and BMX will make their Commonwealth Games debut in 2026, with the assortment of events set to showcase the best regional Victoria has to offer.
The list was confirmed alongside the announcement of Greater Shepparton’s involvement in the Games, with the region set to host BMX racing and men’s and women’s time trials for the road racing, along with a major cultural festival.
Commonwealth Games Australia chief executive Craig Phillips said this served as a major step forward in the planning of the event.
“This is absolutely important from a Games point of view because it allows us to settle the venues and settle the villages around the five host cities,” Phillips said.
“But from our side with our member sports, it means they can now focus on the preparation of their athletes ahead of the Games.
“Today is a big day for a number of sports that have been added to the program, and a whole generation of Australian athletes will get the chance to live a Commonwealth Games dream that may not have been available to them in the past.”
Greater Shepparton will play host to one of those newly included events, with BMX racing set to take to the region’s world class facility at Shepparton Sports City.
Phillips said the committee was interested in including BMX into the program for a number of reasons.
“It will be wonderful to have BMX racing as part of the program,” he said.
“We were particularly interested in having some youth focused events included, and BMX racing certainly does that for us.
“We’ve seen the great facility that is here in Shepparton, so being able to have that racing here is phenomenal and we know it will excite a new generation of athletes.”
