It was a good weekend to have a winning streak in the Murray Netball League as the top teams continued on their way with statement wins across the board.

Tongala, Rumbalara, Mulwala, Moama and Echuca United extended their recent unbeaten runs as they prevailed in their respective clashes on Saturday afternoon.

Tongala set up a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash this weekend against fellow unbeaten side Deniliquin after the Blues thumped Barooga 75-16.

Tonny and the Rams are a perfect 8-0 to start the year — a streak that will come to an end for one team next weekend.

Blues coach Grace Hammond said Saturday’s resounding result against Barooga was a great way to lead into the big clash against Deni.

“We went out firing, we knew we had to obviously, having Deni coming up this week,” Hammond said.

“The girls knew what our game plan was and, same as every other week, stuck to it. It’s easy in one of those games to get carried away.

“Obviously they’re a great side. To beat them we’ll need to beat their attacking end.

“They don’t often waste the ball when they get the opportunity, so our defensive pressure has to be right up from that first whistle.

“Our fitness hopefully can get the job done, but either way it will be a great game.”

Across the Murray at Tocumwal, Rumbalara’s winning streak grew to four games after a comfortable 15-goal triumph over the Bloods.

Rumba was too good for a Bloods outfit still chasing its first win of the season, cruising to its fifth win of the year with a 48-33 result.

Echuca United hasn’t lost in more than a month, with the Eagles boasting a winning streak of their own totalling six in a row.

United was too good for Nathalia, running out a 51-44 victor.

“We managed to get the win against a tough Nathalia outfit,” United co-coach Kate Donahue said.

“From the first whistle we were evenly matched. The second half saw us play our game and we were able to hold on to our lead.

“Our defenders were super against very accurate goalies. Emily Cossar earned herself best-on for her strong and smart game through the midcourt.”

Mulwala won its fourth game in a row after besting Finley 67-27, while Moama now has three victories on the trot after defeating Cobram 67-28.
