Young Rhinos do battle with Barooga

Ned Wettenhall earned the Wired Entertainment Award for his efforts with the ball last week.

The Deniliquin Rhinos’ under-13 team travelled to Barooga to face off against a strong team Friday night last week.

The Barooga team consists of several strong players who have represented our region in cricket.

Barooga bowler Jed Flanagan tore through the Rhinos top order, bowling out four batsmen during his two overs and only conceded seven runs.

Strong wicket-keeping by Barooga’s experienced player Kohen Haddrell kept the Rhinos to a modest innings of just 78 runs.

A strong batting performance from Rhinos captain Daniel Burn of 30 runs, including several boundaries, was again a feature of the Rhinos innings.

Daniel had good support again from Hunter Campbell who scored 10 runs and is shaping up to be a consistent performer with the bat.

Barooga started its run chase well.

Nash Hill and Chase Jarjoura combed at the crease to get their team off to a good start with some excellent running between the wickets and boundary hitting.

Rhinos bowlers Ned Wettenhall and Jacob Holschier struck early, slowing Barooga’s run chase briefly.

Barooga batsmen Oliver Adkins and Carter Haddrell combined well to retire not out on 24 and 14 respectively.

Patrick Berry and Jed Flanagan also batted beautifully, scoring several boundaries.

Jed Flanagan remained not out on 13 runs as Barooga secured the victory over the Rhinos, scoring 115 runs in their 20 overs.

Ned Wettenhall and Daniel Burn were the best of the bowlers for Deni.

Ned had 3/11 after two overs, and Daniel ended with 0/4 after two.

Henry Pisasale, George Bull and Hunter Campbell also recorded bowling wickets.

Ned’s outstanding bowling performance earned him the day’s Wired Entertainment coach’s award.

The boys travel to Finley High School this afternoon, with play from 5pm.
