Grants to repair riparian zones

Funding is available to help landowners protect and enhance the condition of waterways and wetlands on or near their properties.

Landowners who have wetlands or waterways on or adjacent to their properties are eligible to apply for funding to protect these wet zones.

The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority is encouraging people to apply for funding under the Riparian On-Ground Works Program.

The program aims to support works that would protect and enhance the condition of waterways and wetlands.

Goulburn Broken CMA’s river health officer Christine Glassford said landowners should call the CMA to check if their project is eligible for funding.

“Our waterways and wetlands offer critical habitat for both aquatic and terrestrial animals, as well as harbouring a diverse range of plants,” Ms Glassford said.

“Of course, the wet zones vary in size, permanence and condition but they are all important as ‘hotspots’ for sustaining local biological diversity.”

She said the funding would support works including, but not limited to, fencing to help control stock access to waterways, revegetation and the control of weeds and erosion.

“Goulburn Broken CMA staff can provide advice and support about all sorts of challenges landholders face with regards to the management of waterways.

“We refer to these wetlands and waterways as biodiversity ‘hotspots’ because they are important landscape connections and contribute to the overall health and resilience of our catchment.”

Ms Glassford said continued project funding remained available for targeted stream protection and enhancement works with landholders in the Seven and Hughes creeks catchments.

“The Seven and Hughes creeks are ‘flagship’ waterways, home to threatened native fish populations, including the Macquarie perch and trout cod.”
